Alarms are a highly successful form of treatment for bedwetting particularly if used with guidance from a health professional. They can be used from the age of 5 years depending upon the level of motivation and the child's ability to manage the alarm independently. Parental help with waking the child is vital at the early stages of the treatment. ERIC provides good quality support and professional guidance through its accompanying written booklets and confidential telephone Helpline service. There are two types of bedwetting alarms:
These alarms have a small ‘ noise box’ which is pinned to the pyjama top (collar bone area) and a sensor (MEC) that is clipped to the outside of the pants (gusset). An alternative sensor (MAL4) is available to purchase that is placed between two pairs of pants. These sensors are replaceable items and their lifespan can vary depending upon the amount of use (i.e. the number of times per week the child has wet) and the method or regularity of cleaning these items. Wash them clean with warm soapy water and rinse carefully (instructions provided). Sensors DO NOT form part of the Guarantee.
This alarm has a ‘ noise box’ which is placed beside the bed and a sensor Bed-Mat which is placed beneath the lower bedsheet. The sensor Bed-Mats are replaceable items and it is recommended they are cleaned frequently. They DO NOT form part of the Guarantee.
With both types the noise box ‘ sounds’ when accidental urination begins causing the child to wake up or to ‘ hold on’ . Gradually the child learns to ‘ hold on’ to the sensation of a full bladder without the alarm.
Standard single-tone bedwetting alarms are available as well as multi-sound vibrating and self-recording alarms for children who have difficulty waking up or holding on.
Replacement Equipment
Alarm treatment may last several months. It is advisable to purchase a replacement sensor or mat in advance to ensure treatment is not interrupted. For clinic use one sensor to be used for each child. (ERIC Minimum Standards)
