It's great when your child is invited to a sleepover with friends - and school camps and trips away can be exciting too!
They might be nervous about doing something new on their own, or afraid that their bladder or bowel may let them down and that they might have an 'accident' while away from home. Don't worry, they certainly won't be the only ones to feel like this.
ERIC has a wide range of waterproof bedding protection, sleeping bag liners and bed pads. ERIC also has a leaflet for younger children that gives hints and tips on managing bedwetting when away from home called Nights Away No Worries.
Frequently asked questions to ERIC
My daughter is 13 and doesn't want to attend a school camping weekend because she often wets the bed. Although she would rather not go away, I feel educational trips are very important. She currently uses the pull-ups for older children but they sometimes leak. Is there a solution?
We agree with you: these trips are important and they're not to be missed. Planning ahead can often help young people to manage their bedwetting and help them feel in control. You may like to consider a sleeping bag liner or bed pads.
My daughter will be 10 years old next month. As her birthday approaches she is getting increasingly upset as she wets the bed most nights. It is very difficult for her to talk to us about it as she is very embarrased. She has tried alarms, tablet and sprays but so far nothing seems to have worked. What can we do? Should we stop her wearing protection? She is a lovely girl and we just want to help her!
We can understand your concern as bedwetting is a sensitive problem for children of your daughter's age. We are sorry to hear that nothing has worked for her so far. But do not give up hope! It might be worth arranging for your daughter's bedwetting to be re-assessed - you could telephone our helpline on 0845 370 8008 or alternatively also take a look at our main information website at www.eric.org.uk On the question of night time protection, she might prefer to use disposable mattress protectors, for example, (Pampers BedMats) rather than protective pants. It is also important for her to be drinking plenty of water-based drinks during the day (6-8 glasses is about average)
